Subject: How to Find Your Dream Job in the Arts & Publishing
Dear friends,
We often talk about finding your dream job, but it all starts with actually knowing what that dream job looks like.
Not everyone wants to work in tech or startups, there’s a whole world of creative opportunities in publishing, galleries, theaters, museums, and arts organizations. With thousands of roles out there, how do you find the one that truly fits your vision?
Here’s a roadmap for you, creative professionals:
Step 1: Define Your Ideal Role
Start with a clear picture of your perfect job. Grab a notebook, and write down:
- Role description: What would you do every day?
- Job title: Your own words first
- Industry: Publishing, galleries, performing arts, museums, etc.
- Location & travel: City, region, remote or hybrid
- Salary: What would make this sustainable for you
- Hours: Flexible, project-based, or traditional
- Team structure: Collaborative, independent, or leadership-focused
- Growth opportunities: Is this a stepping stone, a long-term role, or a capstone before your own creative venture?
- Skills required: Writing, editing, curating, marketing, fundraising, project management, or digital tools
Example from a publishing perspective:
- Description: Editorial role managing digital content and creative projects, with flexible hours and a results-oriented approach
- Job title: Editorial Project Manager
- Industry: Publishing & Arts
- Location: Lisbon
- Salary: €25k+
- Hours: Flexible, remote options
- Team: Small, collaborative team
- Growth: Builds experience for eventually launching my own boutique publishing imprint
- Skills: Editing, project management, creative writing, digital tools
Step 2: Discover the Industry Language
Every creative sector has its own vocabulary. For instance, an “Editorial Project Manager” in publishing may also appear as “Content Editor,” “Associate Editor,” or “Creative Producer.”
Tip: Search job boards, professional associations, and arts networks using multiple job titles to explore what matches your ideal criteria.
Step 3: Find Your Dream Company
Once you know your role, find the organizations that align with your values and goals. Some effective strategies:
- Networking & Informational Interviews: Talk to editors, curators, or creative managers. Ask about career paths, organizational culture, and opportunities that fit your vision.
- Company websites: Look at arts organizations, publishers, galleries, or theaters with openings in your area of interest.
- Job boards & creative platforms: Sites like LinkedIn and Art Jobs often list opportunities in arts and publishing.
- Curated lists & awards: Explore lists like the top independent publishers, leading galleries, or award-winning arts organizations.
- Google smart searches: “Best arts organizations in [city]” or “publishers hiring remote editors” can reveal hidden gems.
Following these steps, you’ll have a shortlist of organizations that match most of your criteria, then it’s time to reach out, apply, and connect.
